The European Commission has published its Digital Decade 2025 Status Report, which assesses the EU’s progress in four target areas for the EU’s digital transformation by 2023: digital infrastructure, digitalisation of business, digital skills and digitisation of public services.
The report shows that while some progress has been made, the deployment of connectivity infrastructure such as fibre networks and standalone 5G networks remains slow.
More and more companies are adopting artificial intelligence, cloud computing and big data, but this process needs to be accelerated.
While nearly half of Europeans(55.6%) have a basic level of digital skills, the availability of ICT professionals with advanced skills remains low and the gender gap is wide, hampering progress in key sectors such as cyber security and artificial intelligence.
In 2024, the EU has made steady progress in digitising key public services, but a significant share of government digital infrastructure still relies on service providers outside the EU.
