From lab to market: the success of digital innovation in construction

The University of Maribor, with the help of the Enterprise Europe Network, assisted researcher Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zoran Pucek from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transport Engineering and Architecture of the University of Maribor (FGPA UM) in setting up and promoting a spin-off company WatchBuilt, based on his work invention. The company, which was created within the Commercialisation Reactor programme, has already established international partnerships and collaborations for the further development of its product through the network. The support of Enterprise Europe Network advisors has been crucial in this process, especially in issues such as intellectual property protection, publication of the technology offer and expansion into foreign markets. WatchBuilt allows a direct comparison between planned and actual construction processes. The wearable device, which is mounted on a safety helmet, is equipped with 3D scanning technology and other components that capture 3D data in real time during construction. The digital solution thus enables efficient, fully automated and continuous monitoring of construction progress in real time and has the potential to change the way construction projects are managed and delivered. The WatchBuilt team has already achieved some remarkable successes since its inception, including winning the 16th European Innovation Competition. WatchBuilt has successfully presented at PODIM 2023, digitalBAU and won the 1st prize in the Digital category at the EIT Jumpstarter Grand Final 2023, worth €10,000.

“I met Enterprise Europe Network during the process of setting up the spin-out company WatchBuilt. The advisors helped me to publish my technology offer and to find international partnerships, while also helping me with questions about intellectual property and its protection.” ,
