Companies will be able to use intellectual property as a form of collateral under SID Bank’s new funding programmes. This is the result of several years of systematic work by the Intellectual Property Office in the field of intellectual property valuation and financing, and an important step towards the recognition of knowledge and innovation in the provision of capital. <\/div><\/div>

A new opportunity for innovative companies to grow<\/b><\/h3>

Four new SID Bank financing programmes worth a total of one billion euros bring a new financing option to companies. Intellectual property is also provided among the possible means of collateral. The programmes support research and development projects, investments, financing of permanent working capital and the resolution of special liquidity needs. <\/p>

This represents an important innovation, especially for innovative, technological and fast-growing companies. Their greatest value is often represented by patents, trademarks, designs, trade secrets and other intellectual property, rather than real estate or other tangible assets. This is why they are often at a disadvantage when it comes to obtaining financing. The use of intellectual property in collateral opens up additional opportunities for them to obtain development capital, accelerate growth and implement development plans. <\/p>

We have been building the system at the office for several years<\/b><\/h3>

For several years, the Office has been systematically developing the field of evaluation and financing based on intellectual property. This is one of the key guidelines of the National Intellectual Property Strategy until 2030 and its Action Plan, with the aim of creating an environment in which companies can use intellectual property more effectively as a development, business and financial asset. <\/p>

To this end, we bring together the economy, the financial sector, decision-makers and international organisations. Together with our partners, we develop approaches to the valuation of intellectual property, prepare expert bases for its use in financing, organize international conferences, professional workshops and trainings, and encourage the development of a supportive environment that enables companies to manage and exploit their intangible assets more efficiently. <\/p>

In this regard, we closely cooperate with the Ministry of Economy, Labour and Sport, SID Bank, the European Commission, the World Intellectual Property Organisation, the European Union Intellectual Property Office, financial institutions, academia and the economy.<\/p>

Slovenia among the most active countries in Europe<\/b><\/h3>

Our work also contributes concretely to the creation of European solutions in this area. We are actively involved in the Steering and Operational Working Group on Intellectual Property Financing, a joint initiative of the European Commission and the EUIPO, where we work together with Member States, financial institutions and experts to develop solutions that will facilitate access to finance for companies across Europe. We regularly liaise with other national intellectual property offices in Europe and beyond on this topic. <\/p>

Slovenia participates in the preparation of a single European framework for the disclosure of information on intellectual property, common approaches to its valuation, the development of IP-based financing and pilot projects for their use in practice. Thanks to many years of systematic work in this area, Slovenia is today one of the most active Member States of the European Union. <\/p>

Years of efforts are taking concrete shape<\/b><\/h3>

The possibility of using intellectual property as collateral in the bank’s new SID programs is one of the first concrete results of these efforts. For the first time in Slovenia, a financial instrument is being established that directly includes intellectual property rights among the possible forms of collateral for corporate financing. <\/p>

This represents a significant shift in the understanding of intellectual property. It is no longer just a means of legal protection for innovation, but is also becoming a recognised business and financial tool that allows companies to access capital more easily, develop faster and invest more in research, development and innovation. <\/p>
