The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have reached a political agreement on two regulations that abolish customs duties on the import of all industrial products from the United States of America (USA) and enable preferential access for some American agricultural and seafood products to the European Union (EU) market.<\/p>

The agreement represents an important step in fulfilling the EU’s commitments from the EU-US Joint Statement of August 21, 2025, in the area of customs duties, thereby contributing to stable and predictable transatlantic trade relations.<\/p>

The two regulations will be submitted for formal adoption to the European Parliament and the Council of the EU in the coming weeks with a view to their swift implementation. Liberalized market access, once adopted, will be valid until the end of 2029 with the possibility of extension. They contain a safeguard clause that allows the EU to take swift action in case of disturbances or harmful increases in imports from the USA. The regulations also allow the EU, under specifically defined circumstances, to respond by fully or partially waiving its customs benefits under these regulations.<\/p>

Trade and investment relations between the EU and the USA are among the most important economic partnerships in the world. Trade in goods and services between the partners exceeded 1.7 trillion euros in 2025, with more than 4.9 billion euros of goods and services crossing the Atlantic every day. The total volume of investments by EU and US companies reached 4.8 trillion euros in 2024.<\/p>

This political agreement thus paves the way for fostering transatlantic trade by examining further areas for reducing customs duties on imports of products from the EU into the USA. The partners will also continue cooperation in the areas of economic security, critical minerals, and reducing overcapacity in the steel industry.<\/p>
